A radio show created by four Cal State San Bernardino alumni that focuses on Inland Empire education issues has won the Best of the West Media award for a regional organization, campus officials said Monday. CSUSB’s Palm Desert.
“Education Insight,” which airs monthly on NPR affiliate KVCR (91.9 FM), was recognized as the locally produced program of the year by the Western Region of the American Advertising Federation.
The awards are presented to “individuals and companies that exemplify excellence in service to their communities and to the media industry”.
“We knew right away that this was a team that could create something that really mattered,” said Jake Poore, the show’s executive producer and director of communications at Growing Inland Achievement.
The GIA is described as a regional education collaboration in the Inland Empire that strives to achieve education and economic equity.
The show’s four-member production team – Poore; production engineer Tyler Veazey; chief production assistant Alyssa Silva; and Lacey Kendall, facilitator, consultant and communications lecturer at CSUSB – all earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree from CSUSB.
They met at CSUSB’s two campus radio stations – Coyote Radio and Paws Radio.
“Alyssa was already hosting a CSUSB radio and podcast program called ‘Educated,’ and Tyler was creating some awesome audio productions,” Poore said.
Monday’s Palm Desert Campus announcement said Silva and Veazey began working with the team after graduating. Silva said she unexpectedly landed a job at GIA after creating the podcast at PDC.
Veazey said CSUSB helped him become a great sound engineer, build good relationships, and ultimately produce the show.
Produced by GIA in partnership with KVCR, the show airs the first week of every month.
The team interviewed a range of guests, including lawmakers and experts from Washington, DC at the Inland Empire. Poore said the guests focus on factors and values that contribute to lifelong learning.

Kendall added that she hopes to see the show expand its regional footprint.
“We intend to be a team for a long time,” she said. “There are no shows like this, so our goal is to take it to other California markets as well.”
